“Shaping tomorrow’s mobility” - the regional tour of Metalle pro Klima visiting KME
Osnabrück (24.05.2018) – KME invited politicians and the industry association WVMetalle to a meeting in Osnabrück. Within the scope of a nationwide tour, KME and Metalle pro Klima - an initiative of the WirtschaftsVereinigung Metalle (WVMetalle) - informed about potential savings through copper and copper alloys as one of the major non-ferrous metals.
New, climate-friendly mobility requires copper, aluminium, zinc, tin, and lead. These non-ferrous metals have great potential, for example, for making engines, bodywork and drive systems more efficient. This potential must be exploited, as the transport sector is responsible for around 25 percent of all CO2 emissions in the EU. This is why “Shaping tomorrow’s mobility” was the main topic of the nationwide regional tour of „Metalle Pro Klima“, which stopped at KME in Osnabrück to exchange with company representatives and guests from politics on site.
“Copper is becoming increasingly important in the automotive industry. Electric motors with a particularly high copper content save large amounts of CO2 emissions through higher efficiency. Optimized materials and innovative product developments enable the new mobility technology to be propelled accordingly. This makes copper essential for more climate-friendly transport,” says Ulrich Becker, Chairman of the KME Executive Board. “No electrification of road transport without non-ferrous metals. They are largely responsible for the function of electric motors, battery systems and fuel cells,” explains Franziska Erdle, Director General of WVMetalle. “In addition, non-ferrous metals are excellent for recycling - they are therefore sustainable materials,” continues Erdle.
Much appreciated by all guests: the ‘eGoggo’ – a common project of more than 60 apprentices from KME Germany GmbH & Co. KG, Georgsmarienhütte GmbH and Stadtwerke Osnabrück. The conversion of the eGoggo was nearly completely managed and realised by the apprentices’ themselves - from the body construction to the rework of the chassis frame and electro motor to the energy supply. The eGoggo is completely roadworthy and serves today for presentation and event purposes.
This was the fourth visit to a company location with the Regio Tour, which met with great interest from politicians. At the invitation of KME CEO Ulrich Becker, and chaired by Franziska Erdle, Director General of WVMetalle, the Members of the German Bundestag Jens Beeck (FDP) and Filiz Polat (The Greens) and the Members of Parliament in Lower Saxony Guido Pott (SPD) and Anette Meyer zu Strohen (CDU), as well as Tiemo Wölken (SPD), MEP, discussed the future of mobility and the contribution of copper and other non-ferrous metals.
